The Hertz Foundation and McGill University are proud to share the release of a talk by Victoria Kaspi from the 2024 Hertz Summer Workshop, held August 1–4, 2024, at the Mont-Tremblant Resort in Quebec, Canada. Kaspi, Professor of Astrophysics at McGill University, provided a stimulating and fascinating talk about fast radio bursts for a group of 150 science and technology leaders gathered for this annual reunion and research showcase.

The annual Hertz Summer Workshop is the signature event for the Hertz Foundation, a nonprofit that funds and supports the nation's most promising graduate students in applied science, engineering and mathematics through the prestigious Hertz Fellowship. This one-of-a-kind gathering of some of the top scientists, entrepreneurs and leaders in our nation’s science and technology enterprise is a unique source of connection, networking and career development for the Hertz Fellows and a perfect venue to showcase their expertise.

Kaspi’s talk was a “choose your own adventure”, allowing the audience to help navigate the background, experiments and pending questions about the mysterious fast radio bursts. They did so enthusiastically, choosing to explore microwave ovens, magnetars, and a visualization of the night sky. She talked about the “vast array of technology that has been brought to the field” to enable this work and that “it's sometimes humbling to look out there.”

This year's workshop also featured speakers pulled from the Hertz Fellows, such as Tony Pan, founder and CEO of Modern Hydrogen, and Kim Budil, director of Lawrence Livermore National Lab, and other innovators, such as Bill Dally, chief scientist at NVIDIA, and John Platt, Google Fellow at Google.

“We are together with the most inspiring and accomplished minds in science and technology, connected by a common desire to solve big problems and make an enduring impact,” said Robbee Kosak, President of the Hertz Foundation. “This is the time to use the power of this convening to fuel and expand your work and the work of others.”
