What happens when you’re immune to the virus that’s supposed to cure you? Gene therapies promise to be a permanent cure at the genetic level for many diseases, but they’re typically delivered with adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) – which a brief childhood infection can grant us immunity to.
Hertz Fellow David Schaffer is working to change that – by evolving viruses that can get around patients’ immune systems.
