2024 Hertz Summer and Topical Forum Workshop Recap

The annual Summer Workshop is the signature event for the Hertz community and one-of-a-kind gathering of some of the top scientists, entrepreneurs and leaders in our nation’s science and technology enterprise. This year, we also offered a special topical forum focused on the future of energy — supported by the generosity of Eric and Wendy Schmidt. Open to all workshop attendees, this event brought together students with early, mid-, and senior career Hertz Fellows to explore solutions to our most pressing challenges related to energy, with AI, National Security and Climate Change as subtopic areas.

Hertz Fellow Kim Budil, the Director of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, presented, "Shaping the Future: Leveraging Emerging Technology for Science, Energy and National Security."

Thomas Mason, Director of Los Alamos National Laboratory, presented, "Research Security and International Engagement from the Perspective of a National Security Laboratory."

Hertz Fellows took part in five minute lightning talks to share a variety of groundbreaking scientific research and technology development.

Hertz Fellow John Cherian, a PhD student at Stanford University, presented "Can we reliably remove hallucinations from LLM outputs?"

Hertz Fellow Jacob Steinhardt, an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley, presented, "Clarity AI Research."
