Raymond Sidney Volunteer Leadership Award

The Raymond Sidney Volunteer Leadership Award recognizes outstanding volunteers for their generous personal and/or financial contributions to building the Hertz community.

The Fannie and John Hertz Foundation established the award in 2016 in honor of Hertz Fellow Raymond “Ray” Sidney, whose vision for the Hertz community has proven transformational. His long standing, deep commitment personifies the concept of the “Hertz community” through his personal connections and mentoring of young fellows, his generosity in opening his home to those in need of a break from the intensity of their doctoral research schedule, and meeting with Fellows on the road.

Ray’s leadership prompted the Hertz Foundation to launch its annual summer workshop in 2009. Ray envisioned the summer workshops as a way to bring Hertz Fellows together for fun, learning and collaboration, fostering ideas and connections with impacts that reach far beyond the short meetings. As Ray’s vision became a reality, the summer workshops grew into a vital part of the Hertz community, enabling the Hertz Foundation’s work to continue long after fellows complete their doctorates. Ray’s generosity also supports five endowed Hertz Fellowships.
