New York Highlights: Fall Meeting of the Hertz Foundation Board of Directors

The Hertz Foundation Board gathered at the Renaissance 57 Hotel in Manhattan for its 2013 October 18th meeting. Directors performed semi-annual review of endowment assets and management, and approved the annual Form 990 nonprofit financial summary. Productive sessions included announcements of the Hertz Foundation Thesis Prize Winner and the Newman Entrepreneurial Initiative Awards, as well as the introduction of four new Directors named to the Board. The Hertz Dinner connected New York City Hertz Fellows and Friends, and featured keynote speaker and Hertz Fellow, Alfred Spector.

Keynote Speaker, Hertz Board Dinner - Alfred Z. Spector, Google Expert and Hertz Fellow

“The Big Opportunities in Computer Science”

The Hertz Board of Directors Dinner for Hertz Fellows and Friends in New York City was enriched with the keynote presentation from Alfred Z. Spector, Hertz Fellow 1977. Spector is Vice President of Research and Special Initiatives at Google. He shared innovations, perspectives, and trends in STEM education as they relate to Google’s high-speed trajectory in these areas. Spector received his PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University and his Bachelor of Arts degree in Applied Mathematics from Harvard. He was Vice President of Strategy and Technology at IBM, a founder of Transarc Corporation, and an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. He received the IEEE Computer Society’s Tsutomu Kanai Award and has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering. He is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery and has served on the Markle Task Force on National Security.
