Donor Advised Funds
A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a fast-growing charitable program that allows individuals or family members to make a contribution, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then recommend grants from the fund over time.
Donors can contribute to the fund as frequently as they like and then recommend grants to their favorite charities whenever it makes sense for them.
If you have a DAF, you can recommend grants to the Hertz Foundation by using the DAFDirect widget on this page to initiate your donation recommendation.
Once your recommendation has been submitted, please contact a member of our team to let us know by calling 925.373.1642 (ext. 3) or submitting our Contact Us form.
You can use your DAF to support the Hertz Foundation in a variety of ways, including:
1. Multi-Year Gifts (Pledges)
Pledge payments have been approved by the Internal Revenue Service (Section 4 of IRS Notice 2017-73), as long as the DAF sponsor does not reference the pledge in the grant purpose, check memo, or cover letter.
2. Pre-Scheduling and Recurring Grants
You can pre-schedule grants or set up recurring grants within your online DAF portal. These options are an easy way to make the Hertz Foundation a "regular" grantee.
3. Expendable or Endowed Fellowships
A DAF can fund an expendable or endowed Hertz Fellowship. Remember that if you fund a fellowship, you cannot select the specific recipient nor can the recipient be a family member.
4. Employer-Sponsored DAF Accounts
Employer-Sponsored DAF Accounts enable employees to make payroll deductions for charitable giving. Remember to check with your employer to see if this option is available.
5. Lowering Dollar Minimums
DAF sponsors are increasingly lowering dollar minimums to set up a DAF account, including some with no minimum requirement at all.
6. Technology Advancements
Online applications, credit card processing, and text-to-give campaigns have facilitated giving to and from DAFs. We invite you to use the DAF widget to easily direct support to the Hertz Foundation.
7. An Alternative to a Charitable Remainder Trust
DAFs are easier to establish and just as capable of handling complex gifts.
8. A Successor Plan
You can establish a “successor plan” to name another person or entity to your DAF’s advisory role upon your death. For example, you can name the Fannie and John Hertz Foundation as your DAF’s advisor.
If you have questions or want to discuss special circumstances surrounding your gift, please don't hesitate to contact our development office by calling 925.373.1642 (ext. 3) or submitting our Contact Us form.
