Stephanie Tzouanas Schmidt is the Institute Group Leader – Genomic Medicine at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Stephanie started at MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2021 after completing her Ph.D. in the Department of Bioengineering at Stanford University, where she focused on engineering and harnessing new genomic technologies in order to better understand the complex mechanisms underlying cell differentiation in processes ranging from development to cancer. As an undergraduate at Rice University, she conducted biomaterials and bone regeneration research at Rice, MIT, and the National University of Singapore and was awarded the Goldwater Scholarship and the Society for Biomaterials’ Award for Outstanding Research for her work.

“The freedom afforded to me by the Hertz Fellowship means that I can explore new areas in Bioengineering while working to discover insights with the potential to improve patient outcomes. As a member of the Hertz Community, it’s a tremendous honor to have the chance to learn from and contribute to the discussions of experts across scientific disciplines.”
