Hertz Fellow Ed Boyden is one of the 2018 class of Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigators, an award that comes with roughly $8 million in research funding over a seven-year term. Boyden, who holds more than 170 patents around such technologies as optogenetics and expansion microscopy, plans to continue building new tools to map the brain and understand the nature of human thought.
“My long-term goal is to understand the brain with enough precision that we can simulate the computations that occur during decision-making or emotion,” he says. “Maybe we could even define what a thought is, computationally.”
