A Shining Star: Astrophysicist Lars Bildsten Earns Membership in the National Academy of Sciences

Hertz Fellow Lars Bildsten, an astrophysicist at UCSB's Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics who studies the life and death of stars, has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences as a member of the class of 2018. Bildsten, whose current research is particularly focused on white dwarf stars and their explosions as Type Ia supernovae, said “It’s a rare honor that provides an occasion to celebrate what one has accomplished so far in one’s career." he said. "The acknowledgement is quite profound.”
