Julius Smith is a professor of music and (by courtesy) electrical engineering (Information Systems Lab) based at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford University. Previously, he was a software engineer at NeXT Computer, Inc., where he was responsible for signal processing software pertaining to music and audio.

In 1975, Julius received his BS in electrical engineering with honors from Rice University. In 1982, with support from his Hertz Fellowship, Julius received his PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford University. His PhD research was devoted to improved methods for digital filter design and system identification applied to music and audio systems.
