Jim Brau, PhD

James Brau is Knight Professor of Natural Science at the University of Oregon (UO) and director for UO Center for High Energy Physics. Professor Brau’s research focus is experimental particle physics at the energy frontier, including the Large Hadron Collider and the International Linear Collider, and the search for gravitational radiation with LIGO. He has served on a number of advisory boards including: the National Research Council Board on Physics and Astronomy, the DOE/NSF High Energy Physics Advisory Panel (HEPAP), the DOE/NSF Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5), the Fermilab Physics Advisory Committee, the SLAC Scientific Policy Committee, and the German high energy physics laboratory DESY’s Physics Research Committee. Professor Brau served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force from 1969 to 1974, and separated from reserve service as a captain in 1975. During his active Hertz Fellowship years from 1969-70 and from 1974-77, he pursued his PhD in high energy physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
