What a Hertz Summer Workshop Is to Me

By: Katie Maass

A Hertz Summer Workshop is like a summer camp crossed with a conference. It includes technical presentations and discussions as well as community building activities and time to goof off. My experiences have been inspiring, motivating, and just plain fun!

I’m often impressed by how engaged others are. Even though we are all working in different fields on different problems, others in the Hertz Community are always interested in really understanding what I work on and why it is interesting. No matter what the topic is, the Hertz Community is excited to discuss and understand the topic. It is an honor to be included as part of the Hertz Community and for me, attending the Hertz Summer Workshop is what has really made me feel like part of the community.

For me, attending the Hertz Summer Workshops has also been a good time to take a break from my day-to-day in the lab and reflect on what I’m doing and why I like doing it. It gives me a breath of fresh air and inspires me to keep working hard on meaningful problems. The 2015 Hertz Summer Workshop promises to be another great experience. The line-up of speakers will discuss a range of different and thought-provoking topics. There will be plenty of time to get to know one another and enjoy the beautiful and sunny California!
