Graduate Fellowship Award

The Hertz Graduate Fellowship Award is based on merit (not need) and consists of a cost-of-education allowance and a personal-support stipend.

The cost-of-education allowance is accepted by all of the participating schools in lieu of all fees and tuition. Hertz Fellows therefore have no liability for any ordinary educational costs, regardless of their choice among participating schools.

In addition to providing the necessary funding along with the research freedom to pursue their PhD, we also provide mentorship and counsel through the lifelong community of peers to which they now belong—the Hertz Community. This Community is comprised of current in-school Fellows who are pursuing their graduate degree, as well as the entire group of alumni Fellows (now totaling over 1,200). When Hertz Fellows complete graduate school, we intend that they do so armed with more than their degree, research experience, and colleagues from that university, but also with a set of collaborators across disciplines, geography, and generations, all ready to help them succeed throughout their careers.

Successful applicants have the choice of two Fellowship options:

Option 1 - Funding from Hertz Foundation only

  • $32,000/ 9-month personal stipend
  • Full tuition equivalent
  • Renewable annually for up to 5 years
  • $5,000/ year additional stipend for Fellows with dependent children

Option 2 - Coordination with Other Major Fellowship

Often Hertz awardees are also chosen to receive fellowship support from other sources. Hertz supports acceptance of multiple awards and works with each awardee, on an individual basis, to ensure compliance with all funding agencies.

One example of a Coordinated Fellowship:
Coordination with a 3-Year NSF Fellowship
  • Hertz Period: Full tuition equivalent and $38,000/9-month personal stipend
  • NSF Period: $6,000/ year supplemental stipend from Hertz
  • Renewable for up to 5 years
  • $5,000/ year additional stipend for Fellows with dependent children

The Hertz Fellowship award is renewable annually (upon a showing of satisfactory progress toward receipt of the PhD degree) for a total Fellowship tenure of no more than five years.

Fellows must attend one of the Foundation's currently participating schools, or must petition the Foundation to include a school in the United States that he/she desires to attend.
