Through building new tools to look at systems at the atomic scale, Matt studies novel mesoscopic electron systems and their applications. Currently, his research is aimed at developing new nanoscale probes of magnetism based on defects in diamond. As a postdoctoral fellow at UC Santa Barbara, Matt’s emphasis has been on the integration of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond with local scanning probes. This area of research has the future potential to scale down nuclear magnetic resonance measurements to the single molecule limit.
