Dr. McCasland, Hertz Fellow 1979, now holds the position of Director of Technology at Applied Technology Associates, Inc, Albuquerque, NM; where he is responsible for technology identification and development across the range of corporate competencies and applications; and sets the vision and strategy for technology development in collaboration with the Directors of Strategic Development and Business Development. He leads and manages ATAs Independent Research and Development program as well as provides technology guidance, support, and risk assessment across all ATA programs.Prior to his current employment, Dr. McCasland, served for 35 years on active duty in the US Air Force, most recently as the Commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, in the grade of Major General. He was responsible for managing the Air Forces $2.2 billion science and technology program as well as additional customer funded research and development of $2.2 billion, and a global workforce of approximately 10,800 people in the laboratorys component technology directorates, 711th Human Performance Wing and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Major General McCasland was commissioned in 1979 after graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Astronautical Engineering. During his career, he served in a wide variety of space research, acquisition and operations roles within the Air Force and the National Reconnaissance Office. He earned his PhD in Astronautical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, studying as a Hertz Fellow.
